Thomas J. Stephens, PhD | President
Founder and President of Stephens & Associates, Inc.. Dr. Stephens has a Ph.D. in immunobiology from Iowa State University and an M.S. in Bioscience from Southern Illinois University. Dr. Stephens has been a study investigator for more than 25 years. Prior to starting Stephens & Associates, Inc., he was Director of Product Safety and Claims Substantiation Worldwide for Mary Kay Cosmetics and a Divisional Toxicologist at The Procter & Gamble Company. He has published more than 80 scientific articles, technical posters, and book chapters in medicine and science. Dr. Stephens served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Toxicology – Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, and is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. In 2000, he was elected to the “Leaders Society” of the Dermatology Foundation. Dr. Stephens’ office is located at the Texas Research Center.
Lily Jiang, PhD | Chief Scientific Officer and Investigator
Dr. Jiang joined Stephens & Associates in August 2012 as an Associate Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Jiang has a PhD in biology from California Institute of Technology. She has over ten years of research experience studying cell signaling transduction in the areas of immunology and cancer biology. Prior to joining Stephens & Associates, Dr. Jiang served as a faculty member at the Department of Pharmacology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Her work has been awarded several NIH grants.

 

 

She has published numerous research papers in peer reviewed journals and presented her work at national and international conferences. Dr. Jiang also worked at Alliance for Cellular Signaling organization managing projects focused on mathematical modeling of signaling network and at Athersys Inc. leading several drug discovery projects, which resulted in two US patents.

During her time at Stephens, Dr. Jiang has served as Investigator on pharmaceutical and cosmetic trials. She presented a poster at the International Society for Biophysics and Imaging of the Skin (ISBS) for “Quantitative analysis of multiple photoaging features using image analysis of digital photographs” on her publication from the June 2013 issue of Skin Research and Technology and won best poster.

Dr. Jiang’s responsibilities include oversight of the Investigators, serving as a study investigator on clinical trials and overseeing the development of novel technologies for evaluating treatment related changes in skin.

Lawrence Lubrano | Chief Operating Officer
Lawrence Lubrano serves as Chief Operating Officer for Stephens & Associates, Inc.  His responsibilities include
oversight of global operations, quality assurance, sales and marketing, information technology and corporate administration.
Prior to joining Stephens & Associates, Lawrence worked for 25 years in client services, most recently as an executive within PFSweb, a global commerce services company.  Prior to that Lawrence worked with Accenture Consulting, providing consulting for clients in the consumer products sector. Lawrence earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Master’s of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University.
Mark Stephens, MD | Investigator and Study Physician
Mark Stephens, M.D specializes in cataract and refractive surgery using the most advanced techniques and technologies available to give patients a surgical alternative to glasses and contacts. He also specializes in glaucoma treatment using laser and microinvasive procedures. In addition, Dr. Stephens has experience with early detection and intervention of diabetic retinopathy and other diabetic eye diseases.

Dr. Stephens received his medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was named Chief Resident his final year. He’s a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, the Texas Medical Association and the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Stephens practices at KE Dallas Eye Care.  He has served as Principal Investigator and Study Physician on numerous trials.

Lawrence A. Rheins, PhD. | Senior Director and Investigator
Lawrence A. Rheins, PhD. has spent his career in all aspects of skin science and entrepreneurial business, developing a unique blend of science and business acumen. He brings 25 years of experience in cosmetic, personal care, OTC and prescription dermatology testing to Stephens. Most recently he served as Chief Scientific Officer for John Paul Dejoria’s, Aubio Life Sciences start-up company. Prior to Aubio, Dr. Rheins served as President/CEO for Makucell Inc, a University of Southern California spinoff company focused on regenerative medicine stem cell products for the direct to physician dispensed market. He acted as Vice President for Floratech International, a supplier of quality botanically-derived ingredients for the cosmetics and personal care industries.

 

 

 

Dr. Rheins was Founder/CEO for Dermtech International a contract research organization focused on cosmetic and dermatology clinical trials as well as development non-invasive molecular tests for various skin diseases. Earlier in his career Dr, Rheins was Technical Director at Hill Top Research Inc and served as a divisional toxicologist at the Procter & Gamble company. Dr. Rheins holds several patents and has authored more than 70 articles on immunology, toxicology, dermatology and in vitro alternatives. Dr. Rheins holds a MS. and PhD degrees in Biological Sciences (Immunology) from the University of Cincinnati.

Anthony Nuara, MD PhD | Investigator and Medical Director

Anthony Nuara MD PhD is a Phoenix area dermatologist specializing in advanced medical, surgical, cosmetic and pediatric dermatology.   Dr. Nuara is a Phoenix native.  He attended high school as an inaugural member of the International Baccalaureate program at North Canyon High School.  Dr. Nuara graduated suma cum laude with honors and as the outstanding senior in biochemistry from the University of Arizona. He earned additional undergraduate degrees in molecular biology and chemistry.  He went on to earn his PhD in molecular microbiology and immunology where he studied the interaction of viruses with the immune system at St. Louis University where he also received his doctorate of medicine (MD).   Dr. Nuara completed his dermatology training at top ranked University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  He is a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr Nuara serves as the current president of the Phoenix Dermatology Society.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and serves as an organizer for the Phoenix Dermatology Journal Club.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Nuara enjoys hiking, travel, home improvement and car repair.

Shoichiro Yano, PhD, MD | Investigator and Medical Director
Dr. Yano received his MD and PhD in Dermatology from Tokyo University. Prior to joining Stephens & Associates, he practiced Dermatology at the Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo. Dr. Yano serves as an Investigator and the Medical Director for the Japanese Research Center. View list of publications prior to joining Stephens.
